Well, the cold is back! Temperatures have plummeted across Northern Texas today behind the Arctic front. If you read last night's discussion, you were aware that the models were struggling with this cold airmass. They had been several degrees too warm. While the weather models are catching up, that trend still continues today. Right now, it is 34*F at Fort Worth Meacham Airport. The two weather models mentioned last night, the NAM and the GFS, had predicted a temperature of 41*F at 6:00 PM. If you look at the graphic below, you can see that the black dots represent the observed temperatures through 00z (6:00 PM local time). The lines consist of various morning (12z) and afternoon (18z) model runs. It is a similar story for Wichita Falls, which is currently sitting at 25*F. The aforementioned model guidance this morning had forecast a temperature of 29*F and 35*F right now. What does this mean tonight and tomorrow morning?
I expect some freezing drizzle tonight and into Thursday morning. This is most likely near and to the north and west of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Only light amounts are anticipated at this time, but it could create some slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers should keep this in mind tonight and into tomorrow morning.
